Pesticides - Herbicides Use Policy
The PSU FAP Landscaping Services recognizes that the use of pesticides and herbicides in the maintenance of PSU controlled facilities carries with it potential health risks to the University, community and surrounding environment. In an effort to minimize these risks, PSU will strive to create a campus landscaping plan using Integrated Pest Management techniques (IPM) and requires minimal use of chemical agents to control weeds and pests.
When chemical control agents are deemed necessary by the Landscaping supervisor, a careful review of the health effects and possible environmental impacts will be performed and alternative methods evaluated.
All personnel involved in the application of chemical control agents will receive hazard communication training and review the application protocol for the material before use.
The individuals applying the material will be prepared to provide written documentation to anyone requesting information about what they are applying including a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). When Pesticides are being applied, signs will be placed near the areas of application in such a manner as to inform pedestrians that pesticides are in use. The signs will be left up for a minimum of 24 hours after the application has taken place.
The pesticides/herbicides that PSU uses will be those that are commonly available to any consumer and approved for normal household use. PSU will not use pesticides/herbicides that require special agricultural permits.
Note: Pesticides as opposed to Herbicides generally are far more likely to carry with them potential human health risks and as such, are treated differently than herbicides for notification purposes.
