Chemical Disposal Information and Procedures:
It is the responsibility of the waste lab to determine whether discarded chemicals are or are not a hazardous waste.
Unless previously given permission by Environmental Services, do not throw materials in the garbage or down the sink.
The waste lab will pick up chemicals upon waste pickup requests made with the
Facilities work order system. If there is an urgent need to dispose of a small quantity of materials,
please call the waste lab at 503-725-3403.
Hazardous chemicals include but are not limited to the following:
- Compressed Gasses
- Flammable Liquids
- Flammable Solids
- Spontaneously Combustible Materials
- Water Reactive Materials
- Oxidizing Materials
- Toxic Materials
- Corrosive Materials
If you are discarding unused chemicals from your inventory, simply complete a hazardous chemical label, attach it
to the container and contact the waste lab for a pickup. If you have a process that generates a waste,
which has no further use to you, it is necessary to follow these guidelines in order for the university to remain
in compliance with DEQ satellite accumulation regulations:
- Place a satellite accumulation sticker on the container that you are using to collect the waste.
- Label the satellite accumulation sticker with the major components of the waste stream.
- Write the date on the satellite accumulation sticker for the first day that waste is placed in the container.
- Keep the container closed accept for when adding waste.
- Write the date on the satellite accumulation sticker for when the container is full.
- Fill out a hazardous chemical label and tape it to the full container
- When you have a full container, request a waste pickup through the work order system immediately.
Full containers shall not remain in your space for more than three days.
In addition, the waste lab requests that you do not mix waste streams without prior approval since this may result in
unwelcome reactions or make the waste very expensive to dispose of. The waste lab provides waste containers, hazardous
chemical labels, and satellite accumulation stickers.
