Cultures, stocks, and pathological wastes shall be autoclaved before pickup. They are to be double bagged with red biohazard bags and placed in a 105 L plastic gray tub. Human blood, body fluids, and tissues shall be packed in leak proof containers, double bagged with red biohazard bags and placed in a 105 L plastic gray tub.
Animal wastes shall have any preservative drained (when applicable), be double bagged in red biohazard bags and placed in a 105 L plastic gray tub. Preservative shall be packaged in an appropriate sealed container and submitted to the hazardous waste lab as a chemical waste.
Related Debris such as gloves, paper towels and other blunt materials that have been in contact with the corresponding biohazardous waste should be treated as the parent waste and packaged along with the parent material. It is not necessary to autoclave these materials or package them in leak proof containers.
The waste lab provides 105 Liter gray tubs, double lined with red biohazard bags. Do not put any "sharps" into these containers. Depending on operations, other double lined containers may also be used, as long as the containers are clearly labeled with the international biohazard symbol and the word "Biohazard." It is important that the weight of any biohazard container does not exceed 60 pounds (with animal tissue, this limit is easily exceeded). Use multiple containers to keep within the weight requirements, if necessary. In case this is impossible, please contact the waste lab as special arrangements can be made.
Sharps are any sharp instrument that is contaminated or potentially contaminated with biohazardous material or hazardous chemicals and will consist of:
Sharps containers are a rigid, puncture resistant container with a tight lid and are clearly labeled with the international biohazards symbol. They will also be factory labeled as a "sharps" container. Do not use any container that does not meet such a description for sharps. The waste lab will provide appropriate, approved and properly labeled sharps containers upon legitimate request. Make sure that sharps are not placed in the 105 L gray plastic tubs, or any other biohazard container that is not specifically designated as a sharps container. If you generate radioactive sharps, please contact the waste lab for further assistance. Non-contaminated glass should be placed in a broken glassware box.
